On Sunday, the 29th of July we visited Kennywood which is an amusement park near Pittsburgh. We arrived at Kennywood by 12:30pm and then had freetime ‘til 8pm. We definitaly had a lot of fun with rollercoasters, giant swings, fancy food and ice cream. But see it for yourself!
Funfact: „Kennywood‘s open“ is a common saying from the Pittsburgh area. If you say this to anyone from this area rest assured they will check their pants immediately. Did you get the hint in the video above?
After a great weekend filled with many activities we are back on the campus on monday attending classes again. Talking about the widespread problems that Pittsburgh had after the steel industry collapsed, we discussed in groups what we would do with 100 Million Dollars to help the city get back on track again. Our task was to find at least 10 Items to invest a certain amount of money in. Every group made a list but instead of presenting it to the whole group we wrote it down so Corey could have an idea of our writing level.
After the lunch break we had another great English lesson where we designed our own resume with the help of the teachers. And everyone who already had an English version of his or her own resume could ask for further ideas or improvements.
After the English lesson we had a little free time and started our way to Cathy´s house for the Barbeque at 5pm. After a 45 minute ride we arrived at Cathy`s house and prepared the barbeque together. We had some drinks in Cathy´s garden and some students played football. It was a wonderful environment and we got to know some of Cathy´s neighbors, too. They were all very kind and we had some really nice talks with them. One of the neighbors was proud to show us his 2-year-old tesla. He offered some of us to get on a ride with him, so we could experience the feeling in an electric car because most of us have never driven a tesla before.
A big Highlight this evening was the show some students prepared in the afternoon. They danced to the traditional song “so long, Farwell” that is known from Rodger´s and Hammerstein´s 1959 Musical “The sound of music”. They did a really good job, and everyone had a lot of fun. Later some students also danced to the “cotton eye joe”.
This evening was a great one and no one was bored or in a bad mood. We left Cathy´s house late in the evening with a gib smile in our faces and what was also left was a pavement full of colorful chalk drawings. All in all, a great day to remember!
