We are a group of 22 German students participating in a language and cultural exchange program organized by the German-American Fulbright Commission.

Finale of the Summer Institute 2018 and return journey back to Frankfurt

Our Friday started with a walk through the National Mall. In order to obtain a closer look at several famous monuments, the promenade went along the following memorials: Albert Einstein, Vietnam Veterans, Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Jefferson.

After a short recovery we continued our trip to the capitol. Thanks to an ALUMNI of the Fulbright, we had the chance to get insights into American politics, history and their legends.

For example, it was interesting to learn, that parts of the Berlin Wall were incorporated in sculptures located inside the capitol.

Due to the fact, that a lot of museums are for free, we divided into the world of arts, air and space, nature and African American-, and natural history.

Thanks a lot to Mr. Shaughnessy for recommending and guiding us through Washington DC.

In the evening, all of us came together in the student district to have a farewell dinner.

While some of us continued the trip to have vacation from Saturday on, the rest enjoyed their last hours in the capital of America. Despite the warm temperature, the last day in DC turned out to be relaxing on the one hand and on the other hand educational. Everyone was free to plan his day. In the afternoon, we had been picked up to the airport to return to Frankfurt. The last hours together after three weeks of intensive contact were marked by melancholy and happiness at the same time. We are looking forward to being united with family and friends.

On the whole, we are all glad to have had the opportunity of taking part in the Fulbright Summer Institute 2018 at the Washington and Jefferson College! Thanks to our four hosts we experienced a three-week, warm-hearted program. No one expected that a fairly unknown region in the US could provide such an interesting offer of activities. In the end, we got to know new people and will hopefully stay in contact with each other.
